Auction Results: January 2022

Michael Bowman's January 29th auction at Chudleigh Town Hall was a typically upbeat New Year event, with many pieces of jewellery proving popular.

However, collectors' items also made a showing, including a George V Police Gallantry Medal group that sold for £2,000 to an internet bidder.  This had been awarded to Metropolitan PC Reginald Mounce in 1936, for rescuing a drowning boy from the Grand Surrey Canal at Camberwell.

A  6" high bronze pedestal cup, was thought possibly to be ancient Roman and was distinguished by the row of seven heads projecting in full relief from the sides of the bowl.  This sold for a multi-estimate £1,950 to an internet bidder from Cheshire.

The sale was led, predictably, by the 3.9 carat diamond solitaire that a telephone bidder from Kent secured against other telephone bidders from Scotland and Antwerp for £14,500.  An early 20thC diamond set platinum panel bracelet went to a Hatton Garden dealer for £6,000.

Another London dealer on the telephone, was left far behind when strong local interest pushed bidding well above the £2,000-3,000 estimate for an 8 carat yellow sapphire & diamond ring.  A telephone bidder from Portugal, finally won her prize at no less than £8,000!

Michael Bowman is now accepting suitable entries for the next auction at Chudleigh to be held on March 26th.  He is available for free consultation by appointment each Monday afternoon at the Town Hall.  01626 324071
