Auction Results: September 2019
Michael Bowman’s September auction at Chudleigh Town Hall proved to be a very successful event with outstanding highlights in the paintings and jewellery sections.
A self portrait in oils by the renowned Westcountry artist Robert Lenkiewicz (1941-2002), measured just 15” high, but its modest £4,000-6,000 estimate attracted several bidders to Chudleigh on the day. All were frustrated, however, by a telephone bidder who was willing to pay £9.700 for his prize.
In the jewellery section, a lady’s Audemars Piguet wrist watch set with diamonds took £2,000, but the most popular item here was the 5.3 carat colour change Ceylon sapphire. The sapphire was certified as natural and unheated, exhibiting a colour change from rich cornflower blue in daylight, to purple under artificial lighting. Keen internet bidders took part from the USA and Canada, but the eventual buyer was a collector from Norwich willing to pay a final price of £6,200.
An internet bidder from Taiwan bought a three stone diamond ring for £1,400 as well as a Victorian pave set diamond ring with a locket compartment to reverse at £1,100.
A local collector was at hand to take the diamond & pearl crossover set ring for £2,000, whilst a Brighton telephone bidder appreciated the bright colour of the 2 carat ruby & diamond cluster ring at £1,700.
