Auction Results: July 2019
Michael Bowman’s July 20th auction at Chudleigh Town Hall was a well attended event with much competition from numerous internet bidders.
Yorkshire proved to be the unlikely new home for an oil on canvas by the renowned Westcountry artist Robert Lenkiewicz. The 20” x 24” portrait on offer, depicting a male sitter with grey beard from the artist’s Vagrancy Project , sold to an internet bid of £1,500.
A pair of Chinese famille verte porcelain vases were entered for sale by a dealer from Hampshire with an estimate of £300-400 and attracted two telephone bidders, but nevertheless, eventually sold to a determined local bidder in the room for £1,200. Another multi-estimate price came when a 19thC Ottoman kilij (sabre) saw an internet bid from Greece prevail at £1,600.
The biggest surprise of the day came when an early 19th century carpet runner, just 4ft in length, sparked an internet bidding battle opening at £50 but finally ending up at £3,700. The rug came to sale from a Torquay vendor and now begins its new life in Istanbul!
A collection of wrist watches with modest estimates also attracted great interest. Highlights here were the gent’s bi-metal Cartier model that made £1,150 and the stainless steel Heuer chronograph at £1,250. A lady’s bi-metal Rolex ‘Date’ wrist watch sold to a local collector for £1,700.
The jewellery section was led by a striking Victorian pearl & diamond fringe necklace with detachable star pendant which sold above estimate to a Hatton Garden mailing list client for £2,700.
Michael Bowman is now accepting suitable entries for his September 14th auction at Chudleigh and is available at the Town Hall each Monday afternoon to give free appraisals.
