Auction Results: September 2021
Michael Bowman's September 25th auction held at Chudleigh Town Hall proved to be the most successful of the year so far, producing many noteworthy results.
A postcard-sized oil and collage by Sir Terry Frost (1915-2003), entitled 'Three Teardrops', sold to an internet bidder from Derbyshire for £1,500. An oil on board by the early 20thC Russian artist, Konstantin Korovin, faces a longer journey in returning to its homeland, courtesy of a Russian bid of £5,000.
A 6" high pair of Royal Worcester porcelain ewers were unusual in being painted with goldfish swimming amongst weeds by one of the factory's leading artists, Harry Davies. The modest estimate was left far behind when an internet bidder from Lincolnshire finally triumphed at £1,500.
One of the biggest surprises of the day came when two telephone bidders locked horns over two badly damaged tortoiseshell tea caddies estimated at just £100-150. A buyer from the West Midlands finally prevailed at an eyebrow-raising £1,250!
Wrist watches made a significant showing. A gent's 18ct gold Audemars Piguet Perpetual Calendar example, consigned from an estate in the Scilly Isles, topped proceedings in selling to a local collector for £7,700. 'His and hers' bi-metal Rolex Datejusts came from a Torquay estate and ended up going their separate ways. The gent's watch sold to an internet bidder for £2,200. The boxed lady's watch stayed locally at £2,300.
In the jewellery section, a 15th century gold 'posy' ring engraved with stylised wording 'Mon Caur Avez', could be considered a rarity. An internet bidder from California was suitably appreciative and parted with £2,300 for her prize. An internet bidder from Texas bought a 3 carat natural Ceylon sapphire & diamond cluster ring for £3,500. A local collector paid £1,700 for a 1.4 carat diamond solitaire.
