Auction Results: January 2019
Michael Bowman’s January 19th auction at Chudleigh Town Hall was a typically buoyant New Year event, producing some very strong results. Arguably the most impressive of these was seen when an 11” high cranberry & white cameo glass vase was offered with an estimate of £1,500-2,000. Signed to the base by the eminent Victorian manufactuers, Stevens & Williams of Stourbridge, the bottle vase was exquisitely carved in relief with hydrangea blossom. A determined UK specialist dealer on the telephone saw off internet opposition and eventually secured his prize for £3,300.
A local collector also bidding on the telephone, was pleased to buy a Victorian reproduction of a close-helmet for £680, whilst another local collector used the internet in order to buy the small Chinese bronze censer for a multi-estimate price of £1,600.
An internet bidder bought a small bronze Austrian art nouveau clock by Puchegger for a triple estimate £900. This was a very stylish piece modelled with the heads of three sleek birds rising above its top. Another exotic offering was the mother-of-pearl inlaid Syrian table cabinet that a specialist dealer in the room secured above estimate for £1,200.
Perhaps the most unusual item in the sale, was the George IV musical silver vinaigrette just 1.3” across. The vinaigrette is a popular item with collectors today, being a small box opening to reveal a second hinged lid to its interior, decoratively pierced to allow the fragrant smell of a small sponge kept in the base. The example offered in January was slightly deeper than others to give space for a hidden miniature musical box movement. A Belgian internet bidder appreciated its charms for a winning bid of £750.
Jewellery included an antique gold band posy ring that sold for £870 . Highest prices of the day were reserved for the final two lots. A 2.4 carat art deco diamond solitaire sold to a local collector on the internet for £5,600, whilst an art deco three stone emerald & diamond ring went to a Hampshire telephone bidder above estimate for £7,200.
