Auction Preview: 20th July

A small collection of early 19th century watercolours by the renowned local artist Rev. John Swete (1752-1821) will feature in Michael Bowman's 2pm auction at Chudleigh Town Hall next Saturday. Swete was born in Ashburton and became a curate at Highweek before settling at Oxton House. Several of his Dawlish views are included in the collection on offer with estimates between £50 and £300.

From the same vendor comes a small Victorian mug with local interest. Bids of £100-150 are anticipated for a black & white transfer printed mug showing a view of cricket being played on the Den, Teignnmouth.

Another artist with local connections is Dame laura Knight (1877-1970). Though born in Derbyshire, she moved to Cornwall with her husband Harold in 1907 and became closely associated with the Newlyn School. In 1929 she went on tours with Carmo's Circus, experiences which have left us with numerous works depicting circus folk. On offer at Chudleigh is the 1956 watercolur 'At the Ring Doors'. Measuring 14.5" x 10.5" bids of £3,000-4,000 are anticipated.

Elsewhere, the jewellery will be led by a certified natural 5.5 carat pink spinel ring of Sri-Lankan origin. The purplish pink spinel is flanked bydiamonds in 14K white gold and looks for bids of £3,000-5,000.

Final selected entries for this auction will still be accepted on Monday afternoon at Chudleigh. Viewing is Friday evening 19th July 4:30-8:30pm and from 10:30am on Sale Day. For catalogues and enquiries tel 01626 324071
